Mainstream settings in Calderdale

There are things that parent carers and young people can do to help them choose a mainstream setting.

Getting to the educational setting

Parent carers will need to think how their child or young person will get to the educational setting.

They may be eligible for free home to school transport assistance  (up to the age of 16). This could be any of the following

  • independent travel training to enable pupils to use public transport or travel independently;
  • a bus pass;
  • payment to parents to transport the pupil themselves;
  • a walking travel escort;
  • an escort to accompany a pupil on public transport;
  • transport from a pick-up point (taxi or specialist transport);
  • home to school transport (taxi or specialist transport).

Children and young people have to meet the criteria in the Home to School transport policy. This will decide whether they can have transport assistance.

If the educational setting is not the nearest appropriate setting then the child or young person may not be eligible for transport.
