Home to school transport (SEND)

Transport help may be provided in the following ways

• independent travel training to enable pupils to use public transport or travel independently
• a bus pass
• payment to parents to transport the pupil themselves
• a walking travel escort
• an escort to accompany a pupil on public transport
• transport from a pick-up point (taxi or specialist transport)
• home to school transport (taxi or specialist transport).

Special school

All special school pupils who attend 

• their nearest Calderdale special school
• a special school named in their EHC Plan

will receive transport assistance from home to school if the distance is more than 2 miles (under 8 years) or 3 miles (over 8 years)

Mainstream school named on SEN or EHC plan

Where the Authority names a mainstream school to meet the needs of a child with a statement of special educational needs (SEN) or EHC plan, free transport assistance is given if the distance is more than 2 miles (under 8 years), or 3 miles (over 8 years)

Closest school less than 3 miles

Transport assistance can be given where the distance is less than 3 miles, subject to an assessment of need. You will not qualify if you choose to send your child to a school that is not the nearest.

Transport is specified on SEN or EHC plan

Sometimes the statement of SEN or EHC plan will specify that transport assistance must be provided. The Authority will name an appropriate school in the statement or plan. Transport assistance will be provided to the named school.

No help with transport

If a parent chooses to send their child to a school which is not the nearest appropriate school (and is not named as the 'appropriate school' in the child's statement of SEN or EHC plan) the Authority will not help with transport.
