Teachers standards
The Teachers' Standards are guidelines that help teachers do their best to support children's learning and growth. They focus on
- creating a positive classroom environment
- teaching effectively
- ensuring that teachers behave professionally both in and out of school
Teaching
- Set High Expectations: Teachers should create a safe, respectful learning environment. They should set challenging goals for all pupils, modelling the expected attitudes and behaviours.
- Promote Good Progress: Teachers are responsible for pupils' progress. They should plan lessons based on pupils' capabilities. They should guide them to reflect on their learning.
- Demonstrate Subject Knowledge: Teachers must have strong subject knowledge and keep it updated. They must promote literacy and correct English usage across subjects.
- Plan Well-Structured Lessons: Lessons should effectively use time to develop understanding and foster curiosity. They should include homework to reinforce learning.
- Adapt Teaching: Teachers should differentiate teaching to meet diverse pupil needs. They should understand factors that may hinder learning and adapting strategies accordingly.
- Use Assessment Productively: Teachers should use assessments to monitor progress and set targets. They should use them to provide regular, actionable feedback to pupils.
- Manage Behaviour Effectively: Teachers must establish clear rules and routines,. They must maintain high behaviour expectations, and use praise and sanctions fairly. This is to ensure a safe learning environment.
- Fulfil Professional Responsibilities: Teachers should contribute positively to the school community. They should develop professional relationships, and communicate effectively with parents about pupils' achievements.
Personal and Professional Conduct
- Uphold Public Trust: Teachers must maintain high ethical standards and treat pupils with dignity. They should respect boundaries. They should do this while safeguarding pupils' well-being.
- Respect Rights and Values: Teachers should respect others' rights and uphold British values. They should ensure personal beliefs do not negatively influence pupils.
- Adhere to School Ethos and Policies: Teachers must align with the school's ethos and policies. They must maintain high attendance and punctuality standards.
- Act Within Statutory Frameworks: Teachers must understand and comply with the legal frameworks governing their professional duties.
